Real Nappies

In conjunction with Real Nappy Week, Flying Start takes a fresh look at eco nappies.

Every day, nearly 8 million nappies are thrown away in the UK alone. No one really knows exactly how long it takes for the plastics in disposable nappies to decompose, but it is thought that it could take up to hundreds of years!  Not a nice thought really is it! The government are desperately trying to cut down on the amount of waste being produced due to available landfill space. So what can we do to help? 

Real Nappies are the Answer. 

By using real nappies you aren’t just helping the environment, but you are also helping your bank account! The total cost of using real nappies can be half that of using disposables… What a saving! 

You are probably now conjuring up thoughts of frustratingly trying to fidgety fold up baby in a big white terry towelling and deal with awkward nappy pins, when actually; you couldn’t be further from the reality.  Today’s nappies don’t have a pin in sight; nappies come in fresh funky colours and designs, with strong Velcro, popper or stretchy fastenings. They are shaped to fit and are used with inside liners and waterproof covers.  Liners, such as washable fleece ones are designed so that the ‘poo’ doesn’t stick and they also dry very quickly.   

...This brings us onto the washing!

If you don’t have the time or the facilities to wash at home then do not fear, there is a nappy laundry service near! Nappy laundry services collect weekly from your door and at the same time, deliver a fresh supply of nappies.

You can pay by standing order so you don’t need to be at home when the collection/delivery is due. The cost is around £6 - £11 per week, which when compared to using disposables, still compares well.
