Real Nappies
Words: Lucy Henderson - Flying Start Product Reviewer
After the birth of my second child I felt increasing guilty using disposable nappies, watching them pile up in the bin. It was something that had concerned me first time around, but due to hectic life involving work, completing my degree and being a mum, I felt i just did not have the time.
This time with my degree completed and nine months maternity leave, I had no excuses. This was reinforced with the campaign for real nappy week. I had looked into laundry schemes, but this appeared to cost slightly more than disposables, this wasn't really a good option when we were trying to cut back with my impending maternity pay. Therefore I was more than willing to try home laundered products.
I have been trialling a nappy set from Bambino Mio, consisting of 12 100% cotton nappies, 3 nappy covers, biodegradable liners to hold solids (not required, due to Charlie being exclusively breast fed), Miocare washing powder and Miocare nappy cleanser.
The cotton nappies are folded to create a 3 layered effect and can also be folded at the front (ideal for boys) to create a 6 layered effect. A velcro fastening nappy cover is then placed over the cotton nappy, to prevent leakage. At first they appeared very bulky, causing some of Charlie's trousers to be a little tight.
Results!!
Now I have been using the nappies for 3 weeks, I am pleasantly surprised how easy it has been. I have had to use alongside disposable nappies as it is recommended you have 24 nappies and 3-6 nappy covers to use continually and wash every 2-3 days. (I have only 12 nappies at present) During this time i have only had a couple of leaks, mainly due to the nappy being on too long due to Charlie falling asleep before changing him. They do need changing more frequently than a disposable, usually ever 2 -3 hours. I haven't used the nappies through the night, but have been advised to use two nappies with a nappy cover one size larger, to ensure no leakages in the night.
On chatting to other mums and real nappy representatives, I have found out that my local authority, Lancashire County Council offer a £45 voucher to new mums towards the purchase or trial of real nappies. With this voucher I will definately be increasing my supply to use real nappies as a complete alternative.
